CTS Group Ride, Crownland Forest, Devinci Demo Day On behalf of Total Sports & Devinci Bikes the local Devinci Rep took out some demo bike for us to try out during our ride.
wondering... why is CTS not working to open some trail in the Midland area? large group, well organized, mountainview in backyard...drive 45 minutes every time you want a decent spin? put down the camcorder and pick up a rake or a phone, get mountainview open to the public or develop new trail... do something that actually benefits the cycling community
CTS and MCC did try to join forces two summers ago. With both groups being so involved and well organized we thought a merge would benefit both clubs. However, we ran into a few minor issues when trying to join the two clubs. The main issue we had was that both clubs have very different philosophy’s. Yes we both share the love for mountain biking but each on a very different level. MCC has a great team of bike enthusiasts, who train hard, race hard and play hard! I hope you’ve had a chance to ride with members from MCC, their love for mountain biking is contagious. Coupled with a love for biking MCC has a great trail system that they maintain and race on each week.
We would have loved to take part in helping maintain these trails and ride them. However, Mountainview is private property and in order to protect the owners of this land, and to protect MCC’s members from being able to continue to enjoy this land each person who rides at Mountainview needs to be insured with an OCA Citizen Permit or a UCI race License. This is a disadvantage for CTS because CTS is a free club. We strive to maintain a club that has no club fees and no insurance cost. Because of this CTS can only ride on public land.
I hope you have a chance to attend Bike to Work day, an event that CTS puts on each year to bring awareness to the benefits of cycling and sharing the road with cyclists. I believe CTS does its part in benefiting the cycling community. I hope we can be appreciated for what we do.
Well Ange pretty much covered everything I was gonna say except mountainview is too small of a place to ride. My aunts dad is one of the owners of Mntview and he says theres way to much insurance issues to open it to the public thats why you need to have oac insurance.
One thing I think should be pushed around town is a bike trail along side Fuller Ave. Between the supper jail and the MHC there are about a dozen regular riders I see everyday riding and thats the most dangerous road to bike on in my opinion. I know Ive personally stopped riding to work because Im sick of being ran off the road.
Even if we found a spot that we could develop trails in Midland that was public - it would be hard to beat Copeland. We go there because we love the terrain and size. Members of CTS come from all around - so the community is wider then MIdland but we have created BIKE DAY and some fun rides in Midland to promote biking. Also like above we are a FREE group in which members have day jobs, families etc.. we do what we can to build the sport while still enjoying our short riding season. That said - of course more could be done and comments like yours is a reminder for our growing group to take action on new trails while supporting existing ones!
yes eLYK, it is hard to beat. it is hard to remember and hard to believe but Copeland was once a 'hidden gem' too. it did not become the network that it is today thru promotion or demo days... this actually lead to it's current status of a 'gem'
yes, I am a bit selfish. over the course of 13 years to go from a 4 hour ride and not seeing anyone to having a hard time finding a parking spot on a Sunday I feel the promotion aspect is complete. use to be that if I got lonely I would roll down the road to Hardwood, a stellar operation that loves publicity and promotion and even employees a few MTB enthusiasts.
I can't and shouldn't do anything to try to contain the popularity of this spot but what I want to hear that new 'hidden gems' are being developed... why can't they be publicized? maybe they are, can I have details?
I am very glad to hear that giving back is on the club radar. I do not know much about it but I have heard that Awenda would be a natural fit? you appear to have a strong, thriving community here, the Bike to Work day is a nice initiative... I hope the club continues to do great things.
thank you listening and for the feedback. have a good summer.
I have been working on a trail in behind the dump, its alot of hard work and dedication. I hope to develope this trail more each year adding sections. Trails don'nt happen over night though. it takes years before they get really good like copelands or awenda. I would like to say thanks to Chris for the time he spends maintaining and developing new trails for all of us to ride. Cheers to all the trailbuilders out there for without them we would not have any! If you are behind the dump check out my trail it needs to be ridden to get broke in. It is alot of fun!
Chris you are right, Awenda would be a great place for some trail. The problem exists that Awenda is a National Park and building trial on the property is a problem. It doesent mean that such a trail doesent exist;) There are members of this club who are dedicated to building and maintaing existing trail. Myself, so far I dedicated aprox 10 hours to trial work this year(that is more than Ive rode). So groups like this have a quick escape to ride. There are "Hidden Gems" in this area, but there is a reason why they are not public. If you would like some more info about these Gems in the area you can contact me at tinyfire39@gmail.com But to really understand you should come out for a group ride.
So pretty much what your saying is I should be pissed at everyone who puts pictures up on facebook from Honeymoon Bay on Beausoleil Island because I like staying there on my boat.
Pff grab a tissue whip those tears and get a life. Copeland is a public forest and its free for everyone to use. If you have a problem interacting with people then you should buy an x box and hide in your basement.
How I got the name... "Gorilla on a bike" Have you heard of the golden touch? Well, I have the gorilla touch. Weighing in at 250+ I tend to be hard on bike components. I have busted bottom brackets, free hubs, and even crank shafts in half. If you can name it, I've busted it. Plus for the past four years I have cracked my bike frame every season, twice in 2009. Thus, the club started to lovingly call me the "Gorilla On A Bike".

Cancel that $#!% Mountain Biking Club out of Midland Ontario Canada. CTS was started in 2006 between a group of 6 riders that loved to ride Tuesday nights in Crownland Forest. So much so, that they would cancel anything to ride. We continue to grow every year. CTS club is casual, there are no dues or fees, it's really a bunch of MTB enthusiasts.

ReplyDeleteThank you Chris, That is a great idea. It is alway in the back of my mind to do something closer to home. We are on it.
ReplyDeleteHi Chris – thanks for showing interest in CTS.
